Become a Portovan driver in 4 steps

Anyone who carries other people’s goods for money, regularly, works commercially in Austria. That is why every Portovan driver is an independent business. You do not need a transport company: a van (your own or rented) and a free trade licence are enough, part-time or full-time.

  1. Register the free trade

Register the trade “Güterbeförderung mit Kfz bis 3.500 kg” (carrying goods with vehicles up to 3,500 kg) at the Magistrat or district authority. A personal licence as a sole trader is enough: no exam, no capital, no company. You need to be 18 or older, an EU citizen or hold a valid residence permit. Keep a certified (stamped and signed) GISA extract in the van; an electronic copy alone is not accepted at roadside checks.

  2. Van registered for commercial use

The van’s registration (Zulassungsschein) must show the use “zur gewerbsmäßigen Beförderung” (usage code 20). A van registered for private use is not enough; this also applies to rented vans. Portovan staff check it before you are approved.

  3. Two insurances

Commercial motor insurance for the van, and carrier liability insurance (Verkehrshaftung) of at least €25,000 per claim.

  4. Sign up in the driver app

Upload your driving licence B, the registration, both insurances and your GISA extract, confirm that you drive as a business, and add your bank account for the monthly payout. Staff check your documents; after the approval you go online whenever you want.

Austria only: trips abroad with vans of 2.5–3.5 t need a different, regulated licence and are not offered.

How an order works

1

Go online

You decide when you are online. Only then does Portovan use your location.

2

Check the offer

Orders nearby, matched to your van. Every offer shows the price and your earning; declining is always allowed.

3

Drive

The customers load. You secure the load, take a photo of it and drive; at the drop-off you take a photo of the items.

4

Statement

After each month a credit note with every trip, paid by SEPA transfer around the 7th of the following month.

How your earning is made

  • The customer pays a fixed price made of a start price, kilometres and driving minutes, plus waiting after 15 free minutes at each stop.
  • Portovan keeps 23 % of the fare and waiting and pays the card fees from it. The rest is your earning.
  • Tips go to you in full, without commission.
  • Example: 10 km and 20 minutes with a medium van cost the customer €42.99. You see your earning on every offer before you accept. We cannot promise how many orders will come.

Questions from drivers

Do I have to accept every order?

No. You can decline or ignore offers at any time without giving a reason; Portovan never suspends you, ranks you lower or penalises you for it.

May I drive for others too?

Yes. There is no exclusivity, no Portovan clothing and no logos on your van.

Do I have to help carry?

No. The customers load and unload with their helpers; you drive and secure the load.

When do I get my money?

After each month you get a statement (credit note) in the app and by email; the SEPA transfer comes around the 7th of the following month.

What if the customer does not come?

After waiting at least 10 minutes at the pickup you can end the trip as a no-show; you get the cancellation fee minus the commission.

Who takes care of taxes and insurance?

You do, as an independent business: taxes, social insurance and your two insurances.
